The maintenance of proper pH levels in soilless gardening is critical to plant health and yield. An imbalanced pH level in the nutrient solution can "lock out" nutrients and cause plant deficiencies when the pH is too low (more acidic). Alternately, nutrient will become trapped and over-fertilize the plant(s) when the alkalinity is too high.
